Seven Deadly Sins - Design A Day Challenge

Graphic Design / Design A Day Challenge

In 2019, I challenged myself to design something new every day for seven days. This was a pivotal moment in my design career when I felt like I was falling out of love with graphic design.

I had been working in the design field since high school, almost ten years at this point, mostly on projects where I was given instructions about what to create, like designing for a particular event, and mostly under the constraints of the brand I was working for at the time, meaning I had to use certain colors, and fonts.

For this personal project, crafting a design every day for seven days, there were no constraints and no prompts other than, designing daily and posting it on social media to hold myself accountable.

This made the task daunting. What was I going to design for seven days? And with every font and color at my disposal how difficult would it be to make design decisions?

I’ve always been fascinated with the many interpretations of the seven deadly sins in film and literature, for example in the movie, Se7en, each sin corresponded to a murder. In the manga/anime, Full Metal Alchemist, each sin was personified (…homunculified?).

I chose the sins as my north star and began to experiment with the basic principles of design while working with simple shapes and only the names of each sin: Sloth, Greed, Lust, Envy, Pride, Wrath, and Gluttony. Check out my interpretations below.

Sloth

Greed

Lust

Envy

Pride

Wrath

Gluttony

The challenge was exactly that, challenging, but overall rewarding. How did I want to design? This was an important question throughout the experiment. By the end of the challenge, I realized how much I really enjoyed using minimalistic design to convey a message.
